Case Study | Nonprofit

About
Project Healing Waters is a nonprofit that helps veterans heal after trauma through camaraderie, connectedness – and time spent fly fishing. The organization has served thousands of U.S. military personnel since its founding in 2006.
Mandate
After successfully serving a generation of Vietnam War veterans, PHW needed to evolve in order to continue its mission. The organization needed to speak to women, people of color, and younger veterans of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq to stay relevant.
Approach
Third and Grove began work with PHW in 2023, providing brand design, web design, and content strategy services pro bono. Third and Grove wanted PHW's “journey of healing” to come through in the use of gentle colors, soft edges, and a soothing brand voice, while respecting the organization's military background with orderly, disciplined design and impactful type.
Answering the call
Accessibility was a key factor, ensuring the site was usable by anyone with auditory, visual, or motor impairments. UX work focused on separate user journeys with clear, actionable paths for the organization's target audiences of participants, volunteers, and donors.
The power of doing good work
Third and Grove's volunteer work allowed PHW to divert design funds toward a national suicide prevention hotline for veterans in crisis. PHW represents our first annual pro bono commitment to a nonprofit doing meaningful work.
Originally delivered by Elva, now part of Third and Grove.
